The good folks at Automattic have released a version of the Jetpack plugin – a suite of Internet goodies used by WordPress.org sites – for self-hosted WordPress sites.
Running Jetpack on your own WordPress installation is a “best of both worlds” scenario – as Time Magazine’s tech blog put it…
You still have the freedom and control of hosting your own personalized copy of the WP software, but you also get access to some of those additional bells and whistles. Such as: stats, short links, spelling and grammar checks, and a pile of other useful features, with lots more promised in future updates.
If nothing else, installing Jetpack can help streamline the ol’ plugins menu – adding it on one of my sites this evening rendered three other plugins irrelevant.
